A Study of Depressive Symptoms in Chronic Schizophrenics

Abstract
|
|
|
The present study is about the incidence and the characteristics of depressive symptoms in 41 male chronic schizophrenics, who were admitted in National Mental Hospital from June 1, 1979 to Dec 31, 1979 and were met the diagnostic criteria of schizophrenic disorder in DSM-III. Depressive syndromes were assessed by Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS), Symptom Check List-90 (SCL-90) and author¢¥s clinical judgement.
The major findings of present study were as follows.
1. The mean score for the whole sample was 42.8010.06 and 7.3% patients scored over 0.7 on the SDS index.
2. In dimensional analysis of SDS, well-being index and optimism index occupied higher 8 rank orders.
3. Depressive dimension was the highest of all dimensions in SCL-90.
4. The incidence of depressive patients judged by author with use of some items in Hamilton Depression Scale was 24.4%.
